Welcome to this focus on one of the 18 heroes from Altered’s core set (Beyond the Gates). We will review the hero power of this Lyra Exalt. I will then present the different types of deck we can build around it.
If you haven’t read it yet, you might be interested to know more about the Lyra Faction and their overall mechanic with the Leaping into Lyra article. Fen is an interesting hero as the hardest part isn’t to play her but to build her.
Hero Power
Fen’s hero power is :
During Morning, draw only one card. Then, put the top card of your deck in your Mana zone instead of a card from your hand.At Noon — Resupply. Put the top card of your deck in Reserve. Ignore my abilities during the first Day.
With her power, you won’t be able to choose your mana or your draws : this means you can have “dead cards” in your hand you won’t be able to get rid of by mana-ing. On the other hand, you have more cards every turn to play.
Deckbuilding is therefore a critical part with Fen as you must ensure that you have almost only playable cards in every situation. For instance, high cost cards like Kaibara or Shenlong or specific tech cards like rare Twinkle Twinkle are hard to use.
Cards that fit well with this playstyle
Cards with support effects are good choices for Fen as you resupply every turn, like the Hatter or Common Martengale. Low cost cards are also good choices for their flexibility and the card advantage generated by her power.
Archetypes around Fen
Control Fen
This deck is mostly about controlling your opponent : you win by depleting their resources. You also have some highly statted characters like Anansi to win in one expedition.
However, be careful with the spells as you can easily be flooded by them if you don’t use them. It’s especially the case with Twinkle Twinkle and the Sandman : they are good finishers but may be hard to use… don’t forget you can use them on your own cards if you’re losing on one side or to keep a character like Robin Hood for the next turn.

Aggro Fen
You have multiple highly statted cards like Cerunnos, Anansi, Tomoe Gozen, Lyra Chronicler or the Hatter. They give you a strong presence on board in the early game. Small Step, Giant Leap is your main finisher, especially helpful at the end of the game if you’re becoming out of breath.
Cloth Cocoon, Tinker Bell and Cloth Dancer are also helpful to control your opponent and remove their most dangerous threat.

The Festival is a card offering an alternative winning condition. The goal is to have an anchored, a fleeting and an asleep character with the Festival at the same time on board to instantly win the game at Dusk.
To play this deck you mostly want to draw as much as possible to get your key cards : the Festival and cards to activate them like Dr. Frankenstein, The Sandman, Kodama or Aloe Vera. Use your support effects to reduce the cost of your cards or anchor a low cost character (with the Hatter or Kodama).
